ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Postpoliomyelitis syndrome is a clinical condition that can affect poliomyelitis survivors. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate knowledge of poliomyelitis and postpoliomyelitis syndrome among Brazilian healthcare professionals. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study conducted at a Brazilian public higher education institution located in the state of Goiás. METHODS: The participants (n = 578) were Brazilian physicians, physical therapists, nurses, nutritionists and psychologists. A self-administered questionnaire (30 questions) was designed to probe knowledge about poliomyelitis and postpoliomyelitis syndrome. From the questionnaire, we created a structured test to objectively evaluate the knowledge of these professionals. The test was composed of 20 questions and was scored over a range from 0 (totally ill-informed) to 20 (totally well-informed). RESULTS: In general, the physicians, physical therapists and nurses demonstrated better understanding of poliomyelitis and postpoliomyelitis syndrome. The healthcare professionals who had received previous information about poliomyelitis and postpoliomyelitis syndrome had significantly higher scores than those who had never received information (P < 0.001). On average, this difference was approximately 28.6%. CONCLUSIONS: The findings from the present study indicate that there is a critical need for improvement of knowledge about postpoliomyelitis syndrome among Brazilian healthcare professionals. The services provided by these professionals may therefore become compromised. Furthermore, public healthcare initiatives should be implemented to improve knowledge among healthcare professionals.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo do estudo foi investigar se a exposição a informações sobre vida saudável, via aplicativo de mensagem de smartphone ou folder impresso, reduz o comportamento sedentário (CS) de universitários. Este estudo é um piloto prospectivo quase experimental, constituído por 69 participantes, randomizados por turma, em dois grupos de intervenção via mensagem de texto Whatsapp (grupo MSG)e folder impresso (grupo FOLDER). As intervenções apresentaram orientações semelhantes com foco geral de promover um perfil de vida saudável, reduzindo o CS. As mensagens foram encaminhadas às segundas-feiras por um período de quatro semanas consecutivas. O tempo exposto ao CS foi avaliado a partir do Questionário Internacional de Atividade Física na Baseline e após quatro semanas de intervenção. Para avaliar o efeito do tempo, da intervenção e a interação (tempo*intervenção) no CS, foram utilizados modelos mistos generalizados para medidas repetidas, utilizando uma matriz de covariância autorregressiva de primeira ordem (AR1) e foi utilizado o teste post hoc de Bonferroni. Foi adotado o nível de significância de 5%. Foram observados efeitos significantes das intervenções (F = 5,30; p = 0,024), FOLDER (519,71 ± 28,01) e MSG (430,37 ± 26,82), e dos tempos (F = 19,05; p < 0,001) baseline (522,07 ± 22,18) e após 4 semanas (428,00 ± 22,18) mas não foi observado interação entre o tempo e a intervenção (F = 0,430; p = 0,514). Foram observadas diferenças significantes entre os grupos no momento pós intervenção (p = 0,022). Ambas as intervenções parecem ser úteis para a redução do tempo exposto ao CS em uma população de adultos jovens durante o período de quatro semanas


The objective of the study was investigate whether exposure to information about healthy living, via smart-phone message application or printed folder, reduces the sedentary behavior (SB) of university students. This study is an almost experimental prospective pilot, consisting of 69 participants, randomized by class, in two intervention groups via Whatsapp text message (MSG group) and printed folder (FOLDER group). The interventions presented similar guidelines with a general focus on promoting a healthy life profile, reducing SB. The messages were forwarded on Mondays for a period of four consecutive weeks. The time exposed to the SB was evaluated using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire on the baseline and after four weeks of intervention. To evaluate the effect of time, intervention and interaction (time * intervention) in the SB, generalized mixed models for repeated measures were used, using a first order autoregressive covariance matrix (AR1) and Bonferroni post hoc test was used. The significance level of 5% was adopted. Significant effects of the interventions (F = 5.30; p = 0.024), FOLDER (519.71 ± 28.01) and MSG (430.37 ± 26.82), and of the times (F = 19.05; p < 0.001) baseline (522.07 ± 22.18) and after 4 weeks (428.00 ± 22.18) but no interaction was observed between time and intervention (F = 0.430; p = 0.514). Significant differences were observed between the groups at the time after the intervention (p = 0.022). Both interventions appear to useful for reducing the time exposed to SC in a population of young adults over the four-week period

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of physical inactivity in leisure and school time with common mental disorders during adolescence. METHODS: The sample consisted of 73,399 adolescents (12-17 years old), participants in the Estudo de Riscos Cardiovasculares em Adolescentes (Erica — Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents). This cross-sectional, national and school-based study was conducted in 2013 and 2014 in Brazilian municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. Leisure time physical activity was categorized according to weekly practice volume, and adolescents were classified as active (≥ 300 minutes/week), inactive (0 minute/week) and insufficiently active (1-299 minutes/week). Sports practice and participation in physical education classes at school were also analyzed. The presence of common mental disorders was assessed based on the general health questionnaire, with a cutoff point greater than or equal to 3. Odds ratios (OR) were estimated using multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: The chance of common mental disorders was 16% higher in the group that reported being inactive (0 minute/week) at leisure time (OR = 1.16; 95%CI 1.06 (1.27). The prevalence of common mental disorders was higher among young people who did not practice sports (37.2% vs. 25.9%; OR = 1.14; 95%CI 1.04-1.25) and did not participate in physical education classes at school (39.5% vs. 29.6%; OR = 1.25; 95%CI 1.15-1.36). Insufficient physical activity (1-299 minutes/week) did not increase the OR of common mental disorders. Practicing physical activity during leisure time, regardless of duration and weekly frequency, reduced the chances of common mental disorders in this population by 26%. CONCLUSIONS: Physical inactivity during leisure and school time is associated with the presence of common mental disorders in adolescence. The results suggest that sports practice, school physical education and physical activity during leisure time, even without reaching the current recommendation, are related to the mental health of young people.


RESUMO OBJETIVO: Investigar a associação da inatividade física no lazer e na escola com os transtornos mentais comuns durante a adolescência. MÉTODOS: A amostra foi composta por 73.399 adolescentes (12-17 anos), participantes do Estudo de Riscos Cardiovasculares em Adolescentes (Erica). Esse estudo transversal, nacional e de base escolar foi realizado em 2013 e 2014, nos municípios brasileiros com mais de 100 mil habitantes. A atividade física no lazer foi categorizada de acordo com o volume de prática semanal, e os adolescentes foram classificados em ativos (≥ 300 minutos/semana), inativos (0 minuto/semana) e insuficientemente ativos (1-299 minutos/semana). A prática esportiva e a participação em aulas de educação física na escola também foram analisadas. A presença de transtornos mentais comuns foi avaliada a partir do general health questionnaire, com ponto de corte maior ou igual a 3. Odds ratios (OR) foram estimados utilizando regressão logística múltipla. RESULTADOS: A chance de transtornos mentais comuns foi 16% maior no grupo que relatou ser inativo (0 minuto/semana) no lazer (OR = 1,16; IC95% 1,06-1,27). A prevalência de transtornos mentais comuns foi maior entre jovens que não praticaram esportes (37,2% vs. 25,9%; OR = 1,14; IC95% 1,04-1,25) e não participaram das aulas de educação física na escola (39,5% vs. 29,6%; OR = 1,25; IC95% 1,15-1,36). Atividade física insuficiente (1-299 minutos/semana) não aumentou a razão de chances de transtornos mentais comuns. Praticar atividade física no lazer, independentemente da duração e frequência semanal, reduziu em 26% as chances de transtornos mentais comuns nessa população. CONCLUSÕES: A inatividade física no lazer e na escola foi associada à presença de transtornos mentais comuns na adolescência. Os resultados sugerem que prática esportiva, educação física escolar e atividade física durante o lazer, mesmo sem atingir a recomendação atual, têm relação com a saúde mental dos jovens.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo foi identificar os objetivos dos praticantes de musculação em academias de ginás-tica da cidade de Inhumas (GO). Realizou-se uma pesquisa de campo descritiva com uma amostra de 150 indivíduos, 50 frequentadores de uma Academia de Grande Porte (AGP), 50 de uma Academia de Médio Porte (AMP) e 50 de uma Academia de Pequeno Porte (APP). Mais da metade dos indivíduos participantes do estudo, independente do porte da academia, tinham como principal objetivo a busca pela saúde, 66% na AGP, 60% na AMP e 62% na APP. Sendo assim, conclui-se que o principal objetivo dos praticantes de musculação em aca-demias de ginástica da cidade de Inhumas (GO) foi a busca por uma melhoria na saúde.


Objective- To identify the goals of resistance training practitioners in gyms of Inhumascity (Brazil).Methods: A descriptive field research with a sample of 150 individuals, 50 frequent-ers of a big size gym (BG), a 50 midsize gym (MG) and 50 of a small size gym (SG).Results:More than half of study participants, regardless of gym's size, had as main ob-jective the search for health, 66% in BG, 60% in MG and 62% in SG.Conclusions: The main goal of strength training practitioners in gyms of Inhumas city was the search for an im-provement in health.


La finalidad fue identificar los objetivos de los practicantes de musculación en los gimnasios de la ciudad de Inhumas (Goiânia). Se realizó una investigación de campo descriptiva, con una muestra de 150 individuos, 50 frecuentadores de un gimnasio de gran porte (AGP), 50 de un gimnasio de mediano porte (AMP) y 50 de una Academia de pequeño porte (APP). Más de la mitad de los participantes del estudio, independientemente del tamaño del gimnasio, tenían como objetivo principal la búsqueda de la salud, 66% en AGP, 60% en AMP y el 62% en APP.De esa forma se concluye que el principal objetivo de los practicantes de muscula-ción en los gimnasios de la ciudad de Inhumas (Brasil) fue la búsqueda de una mejora en la salud.
